The forerunner of this Gostiny Dvor was Gostiny Dvor by the Green Bridge. When it burned down during the fire of 1738, it was decided not to restore the old building, but to build a new Gostiny Dvor closer to the border of the city.
The Big Gostiny Dvor is a monument of history and architecture of the 18th century, in the past — the central wholesale Gostiny Dvor, from the beginning of the 20th century — a department store. The architect is Jean Baptiste Wallen-Delamotte. The building is under the protection of UNESCO. The Big Gostiny Dvor is located in the historical center of St. Petersburg, it occupies a quarter between Nevsky Prospekt (house number 35), Sadovaya Street, Lomonosov St. and the Perin Line. The building faces the lobby of the metro station of the same name.
The retail premises of the guest house are 13 thousand m², while the entire complex of buildings of the department store is 78 thousand m². Guest houses in St. Petersburg have existed almost since the city was created and played a serious role in ensuring the life of the capital.
