ENGLISH CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST

1

The English Church, or the Church of Jesus Christ, was established in 1723 by members of the English community in the Sheremetevs’ house they hired on the embankment of the Big Neva. In 1753, the building was acquired by the British consul. The prayer hall, decorated in the “Italian style”, was opened in March 1754, and in 1814-1815 the building was rebuilt according to the design of the architect J. Quarenghi in the Empire style.

The main facade is marked by a portico on six columns, crowned with a triangular pediment with sculptures of Vera, Hope and Love. The two-room prayer hall is decorated with columns and pilasters of the Corinthian order. In 1860, the hall was re-finished by the architect A.K. Pele, and in 1877-1878, the architect F.K. Boltenhagen changed the decoration of the facades. At the end of the 19th century, the interior was decorated with stained-glass windows.

In 1919, the church was closed, and its archives exported to London. After that, the City Bureau of Excursions and Travels was located in the building for a long time, later – a branch of the Conservatory.
