Boat House

At the end of the Northern War in 1721, Peter I decided to transport the boat from Moscow to St. Petersburg. In 1723, the boat solemnly arrived in the capital. At first, a canopy was built in the fortress for him. In 1761, Peter’s boat – “the grandfather of the Russian fleet”, as they began to call him, was moved to a small pavilion – the Botanical House, which was built near the bell tower of the Peter and Paul Cathedral by architect A.F. Vist.

The architect did not calculate the size of the doorway, I had to disassemble the doorway and walls of the house to bring the bot into the room.

The architecture of the house reflected the transition from the Baroque decorative style to the strict style of classicism. Simple facades, strict porticoes, high windows with arched platbands are combined with a complex shaped roof. An allegorical image of Navigation (1891, sculptor D. Jensen) is installed on it.

Nowadays, exhibitions are being organized in the pavilion, and the bot itself is in the Central Naval Museum. The Botanical House has a 1/10 full-size copy of the little ship.
